Welcome to The District Grand Lodge

A warm welcome to the District Grand Lodge of Sierra Leone & The Gambia, operating under the aegis of the United Grand Lodge of England.

This website will provide you with information on Freemasonry in Sierra Leone and demystify the myths that surround it. English Freemasonry’s historic records show Lodges holding meetings in as far back as 1390. Freemasonry is a Brotherhood of men concerned with Moral & Spiritual values.

Dedicated to the ideals of promoting Brotherly Love (Tolerance & Kindness), Relief (Charity & Care) and Truth (Morality) above all.  Every member is expected to profess a belief in God regardless of their religion, and abide by the laws of the Republics Sierra Leone & The Gambia. Freemasonry uses allegories and symbolism to teach liberal arts and sciences that form the basis of the ancient traditions. In essence, it inspires Men to become a better version of themselves! The District is comprised of twenty-one(21) craft lodges and eleven(11) Chapters. .

District Grand Master E.C
R W Bro Emile Moses Charles Carr

Brethren as I wish you all a Merry Christmas, I trust also we can look forward to a better 2021. We cannot forget to thank TGAOTU for sparing our lives at the same time as we remember those of our brethren who were called to the Grand Lodge above. May they Rest in Peace.

At a time like this we must also remember all the families of those who had left us. As a District I encourage our Lodges, where possible to visit widows and bereaved families to demonstrate that virtue which may justly be denominated the distinguishing characteristic of a Freemason’s heart.

Brethren we must also congratulate ourselves for rising up to the challenge to rehabilitate Freemason’s Hall and Temple at great cost. We thank all those who contributed. As the saying goes, “You can only get out of Freemasonry what you put into it”. As Freemasons I am deeply touched and enormously proud of you All.
We thank the Deputy District Grand Master and all the officers for what turned out to be a wonderful half Yearly Convocation and Communications. Let us maintain the momentum as the year draws to a close and we roll into 2021.

I am hoping that we can go to The Gambia early in the New year to join the Territorial Committee as they start with Winward Lodge and Chapter’s Installations. That part of our District has greater plans for a new Temple, and so we must go there to strengthen their resolve.

We thank our Liaison officer in the United Kingdom as he has generated interest, monies and continues to encourage Masons from the diaspora to join and support The District in its aspirations to greater and respectable heights.

We are still waiting to see a sustainable website from which we can communicate with the world and change the negative perceptions that is still with us. I thank those who had put the strategic plans together and look forward to rolling that out in the New Year.

Brethren, “we therefore, enjoin you to be good to all; more especially do we recommend to you the household of the faithful, and that by diligence and fidelity in the duties of your respective vocations, by liberal beneficence and diffusive charity, by constancy and sincerity in your friendships, and by your uniformly kind, just, amiable and virtuous deportment, prove to the world the happy and beneficial effects of our ancient and honourable institution”.

On behalf of my Wife and family, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a bright and prosperous New Year.
